Html vs canvas in a virtual keyboard on mobile

I’ve been experimenting with the “Quick type” feature of iOS 8 and trying to figure out what the best solution would be. While scrolling up and down, a virtual keyboard shows up and I can type a letter by swiping left/right.
But what I noticed is, that not only is the on-screen keyboard not totally transparent, the background underneath also looks ugly and white.
My first thought was to use a canvas element instead of a simple html table. This way I would be able to “draw” the background behind the letter, which would leave the real body of the page white. This solves the white background issue, but doesn’t solve the ugly and transparent letters.
I’d be happy to use a canvas, but I don’t know how to create the “paper” background. The canvas elements on other websites always have some “paper” background. For example, the virtual keyboard of Reddit has a white background, as seen here:

While typing the keyboard, the background stays white, but it is fading in.
On my own website I couldn’t even figure out how to make a white background, the closest I came is the one in the “Slideshow” option in the “Page Builder” tool, which is seen here:
